Arts Leader Awarded Medal for Management Innovation

The Australian Institute of Management – Qld & NT today announced that prominent Queensland arts leader Tony Ellwood was awarded its Medal for Management Innovation at the 2010 Management Excellence Awards.

Sponsored by Griffith University, the annual Medal for Management Innovation is an invitation-only award conferred by the Australian Institute of Management – Qld & NT Board. It acknowledges Queensland leaders who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to business growth through management innovation.

The forward-thinking Director of the Queensland Art Gallery was recognised for his innovation in management in leading the team which transformed the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art to a major national and international cultural tourism destination.

Chair of the 2010 Management Excellence Awards Anne Gately said that Mr Ellwood brought to life the organisation’s philosophy of connecting art and people.

"Mr Ellwood has truly transformed how Queensland, Australia and the world interact with the Gallery,” Ms Gately said.

"He has facilitated strong partnerships that have secured significant international exhibitions exclusive to Queensland. These exhibitions, and the increased accessibility of the Gallery of Modern Art, have contributed significantly to the proven recognition of Brisbane as a world-class cultural hub.

"Mr Ellwood joins impressive alumni of Australian leaders who have since achieved international acclaim, taking Australian talent, products and innovation to the world,” she said.

In accepting the award, Mr Ellwood said that he was humbled by this recognition.

"It is certainly an honour to receive such a prestigious Award from the Australian Institute of Management and Griffith University,” he said.

"I feel proud on behalf of the Gallery and all those who have contributed to innovation that we are recognised in this way in our State,” Mr Ellwood said.

The Medal for Management Innovation sits alongside four other awards acknowledging Australia’s outstanding managers in the categories of Professional Manager of the Year, Owner Manager of the Year, Young Manager of the Year and Rural Remote Manager of the Year.

The Management Excellence Awards have recognised exceptional men and women from business, industry and the government sector for more than a decade.
